Ever find yourself staring blankly at your to-do list, wondering where your spark has gone? You’re not broken – freelance motivation dips are totally normal, especially in the middle of summer.
Whether you’re overloaded, under-stimulated, or just craving a bit of creativity, this guide is for you.
Why Motivation Feels So Hard – Especially With ADHD
As someone with ADHD, I’m interest-motivated, not importance-motivated. That means knowing something is important (like doing my accounts!) doesn’t make it any easier to get started. What does help? Dopamine. And that comes from things that are fun, new, interesting, or challenging.
This ADHD trait can be helpful (hello hyperfocus!), but it can also leave us feeling totally stuck when the dopamine just isn’t flowing.
And honestly, even if you don’t have ADHD, I bet some of this will sound familiar – especially when you’re running your own business.
So, What Can You Do When Motivation Dips?
Here are the go-to strategies I come back to when the freelance fire fizzles out:
1. Figure Out What’s Missing – Or What’s Too Much
Are you bored or are you burned out? Motivation drops can come from either end of the spectrum.
- Too much going on = overwhelm and overstimulation
- Not enough = under-stimulation and boredom
Take stock: Are your days too full? Or not fulfilling enough?
For me, summer usually means overload – juggling end-of-term school things, trying to tie up work projects, and preparing for time off. When that happens, some standards (like housework or meal prep) go out the window temporarily. That’s OK.
But when I feel under-stimulated, what I’m really missing is creativity. If that’s you, adding in a creative project or challenge might be just what your brain needs.
2. Shift Your Focus Temporarily
If your brain feels stuck, it might be time to pivot – just for a bit.
Could you:
- Start a side creative project?
- Learn something new?
- Take a proper rest?
The key is to find a temporary switch that re-energises you without adding to your stress.
3. Gamify the Boring Bits
If you need to get something dull but important done (like updating your invoices), add a dose of dopamine.
Try:
- Racing the clock
- Playing music
- Doing it alongside someone else (a.k.a. body doubling)
- Making it a competition – even with your kids!
Micro-goals, little wins, and fun tweaks make a huge difference when motivation is low.
4. Talk It Out (Yes, Even with Yourself!)
Sometimes, all the thoughts in our heads just need a place to land.
Try:
- A chat with a coach
- Voxering a business buddy
- Even sending a voice note to yourself
Verbal processing is powerful. Often, we don’t realise what’s really on our minds until we say it out loud.
5. Zoom Out & Reconnect with Your “Why”
If your motivation is consistently gone, it’s time to zoom out.
Ask yourself:
- Is this something I want to be doing?
- Am I doing this because I “should”… or because I want to?
Freelancing gives us flexibility – and that means we get to shift things when they’re not working anymore.
Motivation Doesn’t Always Magically Appear
You don’t always have to feel motivated to get started – sometimes, the act of doing brings the motivation back. But you can support yourself with simple shifts, breaks, creative reboots and community.
And speaking of community…
