In January, Emma launched The Freelance Lifestyle, a book created to support freelancers at every stage. It is designed to guide people who are brand new to freelancing, while also working as a reference you can return to when things feel unclear, slow down, or need a refresh.
In this episode of the Freelancers Tea Break, Emma shares a short snippet from the introduction of the book, starting with the most important question of all: what actually is freelancing?
A simple definition of freelancing
At its core, freelancing means working for yourself and offering your skills to multiple clients rather than being employed by a single organisation.
Clients might hire you:
For a specific project
To complete a defined task
For ongoing support over a set number of hours each month
Some freelancers work with several clients at the same time. Others move from project to project across the year. For example, a website designer might build ten different websites over twelve months, but not all at once.
Many people work with freelancers every day without realising it. Hairdressers, plumbers, actors, presenters, musicians and comedians are often freelance. Unless they are tied into a single employer, they are running their own businesses and offering their services to multiple clients.
What running a freelance business really involves
Being freelance is about more than the work you do for clients. You are responsible for all parts of the business, including:
Finding and managing clients
Marketing your services
Handling your finances and accounts
This can feel intimidating at first, but it also gives you freedom. You get to choose how your business runs.
You might decide to outsource tasks you do not enjoy or feel confident with, such as working with an accountant to manage your finances. You might prefer PR or networking over social media marketing. Freelancing allows you to build a business in a way that suits your strengths, preferences and life.
Understanding finances and responsibility
One of the key differences with freelancing is how income and tax work. In the UK, freelancers are responsible for setting aside money for tax, National Insurance and, where relevant, student loan repayments. This is usually paid once or twice a year through self-assessment, rather than being taken automatically from a monthly payslip.
This responsibility can feel daunting, but it is manageable with the right systems and knowledge. Emma covers this in more detail later in the book, helping freelancers understand what to expect and how to plan ahead.
Freelancing today
The term “freelancing” has evolved over time, and not everyone uses the label, even if they are working in this way. At its heart, freelancing means being self-employed, choosing your clients, and working with multiple people or organisations across the year. That work might happen simultaneously or one project at a time, but the key element is control.
This episode is particularly helpful if you are new to freelancing and searching for clarity. It also acts as a reminder of just how broad and flexible freelance work can be.
