As the year winds down, it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and plan your path forward without the pressure to hustle. In Emma’s latest Freelancers Tea Break episode, she explores simple yet powerful questions to help you finish the year feeling accomplished and energised – not burnt out. Whether you’re wrapping up projects, setting boundaries around your time off, or deciding what goals truly matter, this thoughtful approach to quarter four could be just what you need to close out 2025 on your own terms.

In this week’s The Freelancer’s Tea Break – the short and sweet podcast you can enjoy while you’re making a cuppa – I want to talk about something that always seems to sneak up on us: Quarter Four.
But don’t worry, this isn’t one of those “end the year on a high!” or “hustle ‘til you make it!” pep talks. Instead, I want to offer a few gentle questions to help you reflect on what really matters as the year wraps up – so you can finish feeling good about yourself and your business, not burnt out.
1. When Will You Finish for the Year?
Let’s start with something practical: when are you going to stop working for the year?
Whether you’re taking a full Christmas break or just a few days off, decide on those dates now. That way, you can:
Block it out in your diary
Plan your workload backwards
Let clients know early (ideally by the start of December)
Setting those boundaries in advance helps you finish strong without last-minute chaos or guilt about logging off.
2. What Do You Not Want to Take Into 2026?
We all have projects or admin tasks that have been lingering on the back burner for… far too long.
Maybe it’s an unfinished project, half-written proposal, or a “someday” idea that’s been gathering digital dust. Ask yourself honestly – is it really something you want to carry forward into next year?
If not, now’s the time to clear the decks. You might even block out a single “finish it or forget it” day to wrap up loose ends and start the new year lighter.
3. How’s Your Energy During Autumn and Winter?
Everyone’s energy fluctuates with the seasons – and it’s worth recognising yours.
Some of us (me included!) feel more energised in the colder months – maybe it’s the cooler air or better sleep. Others feel their motivation dip as the days get shorter.
If you’re in the latter camp, don’t load your to-do list with unrealistic goals. Instead, give yourself permission to slow down, rest more, and focus on smaller, meaningful projects.
I highly recommend the book Wintering by Katherine May – it’s a beautiful reminder that slowing down is a natural, necessary part of any cycle, in life or business.
4. What Would Make You Feel Proud by the End of the Year?
This isn’t about smashing big goals. It’s about identifying what would genuinely make you feel good when you close your laptop in December.
Maybe it’s:
Finally decluttering your office
Clearing out your inbox
Completing your self-assessment early
Hitting your minimum financial goal
Whatever it is, make space for it. Finishing the year proud – not pressured – is the best kind of success.
Reflect, Reset, and Rest
You might already have your Quarter Four goals in place – or maybe you’re skipping them entirely this year. Either is completely fine.
What matters most is taking a moment to pause, reflect, and decide what will help you feel good heading into 2026.
