The world of freelancing has always been flexible, but lately? It’s feeling downright strange. If you’re a freelancer or small business owner wondering why things feel off – whether it’s slower client leads, changes in income, or just a general sense of “what is going on?” – you’re not alone.
In this episode of The Freelancers Tea Break, I’m sharing a bit of a brain dump about what I’m seeing and hearing from freelancers everywhere right now. Spoiler: things are weird. But weird doesn’t mean hopeless. It just means it’s time to pause, reflect, and pivot.
What’s Actually Going On in the Freelance World? Over the past few months, many freelancers and business owners have noticed a shift. Here’s what I think is contributing:
1. AI Overload and Content Saturation
AI has made content creation easier and faster. That’s great – until it isn’t. Social media is now flooded with content, leaving us all a bit overwhelmed and craving more authentic connection over information dumps.
2. Shift From Education to Storytelling
We’re seeing a move away from “how-to” content to more human, narrative-driven posts. Why? Because people want connection. They want to work with people they like and trust – not just someone who can give them another checklist.
3. Service Providers Are Back in Demand
The DIY phase is over for many business owners. They’re too exhausted to do everything themselves – and they’re ready to hand things off. That’s where you, as a freelancer, step in. Offering done-for-you services is incredibly valuable right now.
4. One-to-One Is Having a Moment
Yes, courses and passive income are still viable. But people want support and accountability. They don’t want to buy a course and forget about it – they want someone who checks in, cheers them on, and helps them follow through.
Feeling the Strain? You’re Not Alone
With the cost of living still climbing, and uncertainty on the horizon, many freelancers are seeing lower profits – even if their income looks the same. If that’s you, please know it’s not a reflection of your ability or effort. You’re navigating a tough environment.
So what can you do?
5 Practical Things You Can Do Now
1. Review Your Prices
If you haven’t raised your rates in over a year, now’s the time to check in. Have your costs gone up? Have you gained new skills or experience? If yes, your pricing should reflect that.
2. Get Feedback From Clients
Things have changed. What your audience wanted a year ago may not be what they want now. Ask them. Run a poll, send an email, or have a few quick chats to understand where they’re at.
3. Revisit Your Boundaries
In shaky times, it’s easy to say yes to red-flag clients. Solid contracts and firm terms help protect your time, energy, and mental wellbeing.
4. Focus on Connection
Attend a networking event, meet up with a freelance friend, drop into a co-working day – or even just DM someone you admire. The craving for real connection is growing, and it’s a powerful way to build trust and visibility.
5. Explore New Channels
If Instagram isn’t working for you right now, try Substack. Team up with another freelancer for a joint offer. Start a referral scheme. This is your permission slip to test new approaches without having to go all in.
Final Thoughts: It’s Weird, But You’ve Got This
This episode wasn’t polished or pre-planned, but it came from the heart. The message? Yes, it’s weird out there. But you’re not alone. Many of us are figuring it out as we go – and that’s okay.
What matters now is connecting, experimenting, and looking after yourself. You’ve survived change before. You’ll do it again.
