Freelancing comes with its fair share of challenges and at some point, every freelancer experiences a confidence knock. Whether it’s dealing with a difficult client, struggling at a networking event, or receiving unexpected negative feedback, setbacks are part of the journey. But the good news is that you can rebuild your confidence and come back stronger.
In this post, we’ll explore practical strategies to regain your confidence after a difficult situation, including reframing negative experiences, keeping track of positive feedback, assessing criticism objectively, seeking support, and stepping outside your comfort zone.
1. Reframe Negative Experiences
One of the most effective ways to move past a confidence knock is to reframe the situation. A great technique from the book Positive Intelligence is to ask yourself: What is the gift or lesson in this experience?
For example, I once had a freelancing disaster while working for a training company. I arrived unprepared, with the wrong notes, no access to the right slides, and a technical nightmare that made me feel like a complete failure. But in hindsight, this situation taught me valuable lessons:
- Always double-check my preparation.
- Create a checklist to avoid similar mistakes.
- Learn how to handle unexpected challenges with professionalism.
By finding the lessons in setbacks, you shift your mindset from self-criticism to growth.
2. Keep a Praise File
When your confidence takes a hit, it’s easy to dwell on the negatives. To counteract this, create a Praise File (or a “Lovely Things” file).
This could be:
- A folder in your email where you save positive feedback.
- A collection of kind social media comments or testimonials.
- A journal where you jot down client wins and achievements.
Reviewing this file when you’re feeling low reminds you that one setback does not define your worth or abilities.
3. Assess Whether the Criticism is About You or Them
Sometimes, negative feedback is constructive and helps you improve. Other times, it says more about the person giving it than about your actual performance.
Ask yourself:
- Was the feedback specific and actionable? If yes, it might be worth learning from.
- Did the criticism feel personal or vague? If so, it might be more about the other person’s mood or preferences.
- Could this client be difficult with everyone? Some clients use power plays to manipulate freelancers — recognising this helps you detach from unfair feedback.
Gaining distance from criticism allows you to assess it rationally rather than letting it destroy your confidence.
4. Reach Out to Other Freelancers
Confidence knocks feel isolating, but remember: You are not alone. Every freelancer has had a bad experience at some point. Talking about it with others can be incredibly reassuring.
Ways to connect:
- Join a freelancer community on Facebook or Discord.
- Reach out to freelance friends and share your experience.
- Consider booking a coaching or mentorship session for deeper support.
Talking through setbacks helps you process them and gain perspective faster.
5. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
Confidence doesn’t come from staying in your safe zone – it grows when you challenge yourself. Think of confidence like a muscle: the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
The Comfort Zone model consists of three stages:
- Comfort Zone – Feels safe, but no growth happens.
- Fear Zone – Feels scary but leads to new experiences.
- Growth Zone – Where confidence expands as you master new challenges.
Start small:
- Speak on an Instagram Story.
- Reach out to a potential client.
- Post in a networking group.
Each small step outside your comfort zone makes the next one easier.
Final Thoughts
Confidence knocks are inevitable in freelancing, but they don’t have to define you. By reframing setbacks, keeping track of positive feedback, assessing criticism objectively, leaning on your community, and gradually pushing outside your comfort zone, you can rebuild your confidence and come back even stronger.
