Freelancing comes with a lot of perks—flexibility, control over your workload, and the ability to work in your pyjamas. But it also comes with its fair share of challenges, like staying motivated, managing tedious tasks, and avoiding procrastination. If you find yourself struggling with any of these, you might want to take a leaf out of the gaming world and start gamifying your freelance life!
As a self-confessed gamer, I’ve discovered that adding game-like elements to my work and home life makes everything more enjoyable and productive. So, let’s dive into some of the ways you can introduce gamification into your freelancing routine.
1. Roll the Dice or Race the Clock for Housework
Let’s be honest—housework is dull. But turning it into a game can make it bearable, maybe even fun.
- Rolling the Dice: Write down six tasks and assign each a number. Roll a die to determine which task to tackle first. If you really don’t want to do the one you land on, roll again—you’ll still end up being productive.
- Racing the Clock: Set a timer and challenge yourself to complete a task before it runs out. Can you tidy the kitchen in one song? Empty the dishwasher in 60 seconds? You’d be surprised how motivating this can be.
- ChatGPT as a Cheerleader: If you struggle to get started, try feeding your task list into ChatGPT. It can break them down and cheer you on, making the process less overwhelming.
2. Beating the Clock for Work Tasks
Time management is one of the trickiest parts of freelancing. A great tool I use is Sunsama, which helps with time-blocking and productivity tracking.
- Estimate how long a task will take and set a timer—this gives you something to beat!
- Compete with AI: Sunsama’s AI predicts task durations, which turns into a fun challenge to prove it wrong.
- Parkinson’s Law: The idea that work expands to fill the time available is real! Giving yourself a clear deadline keeps things efficient.
3. Side Quests: The Freelance-Friendly Way to Manage Distractions
Freelancers often get sidetracked by “shiny object syndrome.” Instead of beating yourself up, embrace it with side quests.
- A side quest is a task that’s not urgent but still valuable. Think of it as a fun detour rather than procrastination.
- If you find yourself drifting, label it a side quest and either set a timer for it or add it to a list to tackle later.
- Works well in meetings too! When discussions veer off course, park unrelated topics in a “side quest list” so they don’t derail the main agenda.
4. Stats Tracking: Keep Score on Your Progress
Keeping track of your freelance stats isn’t just helpful—it can actually be fun.
- Every week, my Virtual Assistant and I check stats like social media growth, email list numbers, and sales.
- Watching progress, even in small increments, keeps motivation high and helps identify what’s working.
- It turns your business into a bit of a strategy game, where you can tweak and optimise for better results.
5. Streaks: Build Consistency Without the Pressure
Streaks are a great way to stay motivated without feeling like you’ve “failed” if you miss a day.
- Elizabeth Goddard’s Silver Streaks programme tracks daily wins, rewarding consistency.
- You can apply this to freelance goals like daily LinkedIn posts, outreach emails, or content creation.
- If you break a streak, just start a new one—no guilt, just progress!
6. Rewards: Because Freelancers Deserve Treats Too
As a freelancer, you don’t have a manager handing out performance bonuses, so you need to reward yourself.
- Set a reward for achieving big milestones—whether it’s a Netflix binge, a spa afternoon, or a fancy coffee.
- Rewards create a sense of closure on tasks, helping you move forward without burnout.
- Even small wins deserve recognition—gold star stickers, anyone?
