Freelancing can feel like a constant juggle – especially right now, when industries are shifting and AI is shaking things up. That’s why September is the perfect time to reset, review, and refocus on how you run your business.

In the past two episodes of The Freelancers Tea Break, we’ve looked at clarifying your offers and tracking where your clients come from. This week, we’re tackling the next piece of the puzzle: being visible so that clients can actually find you.

Because here’s the truth: clients can’t hire you if they forget you exist.

Visibility isn’t about being everywhere, burning yourself out, or shouting louder than everyone else. It’s about showing up in the right ways, consistently enough that you’re remembered when someone asks, “Do you know a freelancer who…?”

To make it simple, I use what I call the Freelance Client Funnel Four:

1. Social Media

Pick one platform and commit to showing up there. You don’t need to be on everything.

  • If you’re highly visual, Instagram might be best.

  • If you’re B2B, LinkedIn often converts well.

  • If you’re just starting out, choose the platform where you’re already making connections.

Aim for a mix of posts each week: one promotional, one tip or insight, and one storytelling post (stories are performing really well right now).

2. Networking

Even if the thought makes you cringe, networking can fast-track your freelancing. Meeting people face-to-face builds trust far quicker than online interactions. You don’t have to go to every event – find the ones that feel welcoming and aligned with your work.

And if you’re introverted or easily overwhelmed? Start small. Even one strong connection can lead to referrals and collaborations.

3. Referrals

Word of mouth is gold. Former clients, peers, or even family and friends can become advocates for your business. The secret? Do great work – and stay in touch.

Tools like Covve (an app that reminds you to follow up with contacts) or even calendar reminders can help you stay visible to your existing network.

4. Pitching

This is where you proactively reach out – whether that’s:

  • Pitching your services to potential clients

  • Reaching out to media for PR opportunities

  • Volunteering as a guest expert or speaker

Pitching doesn’t have to be pushy. Done right, it positions you as helpful and solution-focused.

The Key: Small, Regular Steps

You don’t need to do everything at once. Instead, pick one small action from each area each week. For example:

  • Post a tip on LinkedIn

  • Follow up with someone you met at a networking event

  • Send a quick email to a past client

  • Pitch a guest article or expert comment to local media

These small, consistent steps add up – much more than one-off bursts of panic pitching.

Freelancers who stay visible are the ones who get remembered and recommended. That doesn’t mean working 24/7 or being on every platform. It means choosing the right strategies for you and showing up in small, sustainable ways.

So this week, ask yourself: Which of the four – social media, networking, referrals, pitching – do I need to focus on first?

Ready to put this into practice without the overwhelm?

Stay visible, stay confident, and keep building that freelance business you love.
