In this post, we’re exploring a popular concept I share with my coaching clients: the three levels of service you can offer as a freelancer – Do It Yourself (DIY), Done With You (DWY), and Done For You (DFY).

If you’ve ever struggled to price your services or find scalable ways to work with more clients, understanding and applying this tiered approach can be a game-changer.

What Are the Three Levels of Freelance Services?

1. Do It Yourself (DIY)

DIY offerings are low-cost, low-touch products your clients can use independently. These might include:

  • Digital downloads

  • E-books or guides

  • Self-paced courses

  • Templates and checklists

These are ideal for clients on a budget or those who prefer to work on their own terms. You create them once and they can sell repeatedly without ongoing input from you.

Example: If you’re a social media manager, your DIY offer might be a set of pre-made Instagram Reel prompts or a course on creating Instagram Stories.

2. Done With You (DWY)

DWY services offer more support and interaction. They are best suited for clients who want accountability, structure, and guidance, but still want to do the work themselves.

Common DWY formats include:

  • Group coaching programs

  • Memberships

  • Live-run online courses

  • Five-day challenges or co-working sessions

These mid-priced services let you work alongside multiple clients, offering personalised help without the full-time commitment of DFY services.

3. Done For You (DFY)

DFY services are high-ticket offerings where you handle the work entirely for the client. This is where many freelancers start their business, offering:

  • Website design

  • Copywriting packages

  • Social media management

  • Branding and content creation

Because these services require more of your time and expertise, they’re priced higher and usually offered to fewer clients.

The Freelance Service Funnel: DIY, DWY, DFY

Think of these three tiers as a service funnel:

  • Top of the funnel: Done For You – premium, high-investment services with fewer clients

  • Middle of the funnel: Done With You – structured support for more clients at a medium price point

  • Bottom of the funnel: Do It Yourself – accessible, low-cost products with high volume potential

Clients might start with a DIY product and later move up to DWY or DFY as their needs evolve. This creates a natural customer journey and gives them multiple entry points into your business.

How I Use This Tiered Model in My Coaching Business

Here’s how I apply this model in my own freelance coaching:

  • DIY: Templates, digital resources, and self-paced courses for freelancers

  • DWY: My coaching membership, Voxer support, and group workshops

  • DFY-style coaching: Strategy intensives like half-day or full-day planning sessions

Even if your business is based around 1:1 work, you can introduce DIY and DWY offerings to provide value to more people and increase your income streams.

Why This Model Works

Offering a variety of service levels allows you to:

  • Serve a wider range of clients

  • Reduce time-intensive work

  • Create scalable income streams

  • Guide clients through a natural upgrade path

By building your services around this model, you provide more options while still maintaining control over your time and pricing.
