AI – Gaining Time, But Losing Creativity

by | Aug 28, 2025 | The Freelancer's Teabreak Podcast

Have you ever noticed that the more you lean on AI, the less motivated you feel in your freelance business? If your spark’s been flickering lately, you’re not alone and you’re definitely not broken. In this episode of The Freelancers Tea Break, I open up about my own love-hate relationship with AI, how it can boost or block creativity, and why it’s worth pausing to reflect on how it’s showing up in your work.

I’ll be the first to say: AI can be a really useful tool. Whether you’re stuck on a blank page or mapping out a new project, it’s great for idea prompts and starter content. But there’s a fine line between using AI and overusing it to the point it replaces the creative spark that made freelancing fun in the first place.

Recently, I realised something important:
The more I rely on AI, the less time I spend doing the creative things I actually enjoy – like writing, designing in Canva, or recording podcast episodes (complete with my usual ums and ahs).

And without that creative outlet? Everything starts to feel a bit… flat.

The Real Risks of Over-Relying on AI

Here are a few areas where I think we need to be more cautious with how we use AI in our businesses:

  1. It Can Stifle Your Creativity

Even if you’re not “artistic” in the traditional sense, creativity is everywhere – from writing a blog to designing a graphic or recording a podcast. When AI takes over those tasks, we rob ourselves of the joy and mental health benefits that come from making something ourselves.

  1. It Weakens Critical Thinking

I had a hilarious (and slightly worrying) moment recently where ChatGPT completely made up a capability – it told me it could generate Canva links for editing, then backtracked with a bizarre excuse. It reminded me that we must keep questioning and cross-checking AI’s output.

  1. It Can Muddle Your Research

Some AI tools pull info from biased or outdated sources. If you’re using AI to support client work or business decisions, that’s a big red flag – always check your sources.

  1. Platforms Are Starting to Push Back

YouTube, for example, is now penalising AI-generated videos that rely too heavily on automated voices or repurposed content. We could see more platforms tightening rules around transparency and originality

So, What’s the Solution?

You don’t have to ditch AI completely – it can be a helpful support tool. But if your creativity tank is running low, try this:

  • Check in with yourself: Are you using AI to save time, or to avoid creativity altogether?
  • Reclaim your creative space: Do something purely for fun – write, draw, doodle, play, voice note yourself – whatever feels good.
  • Talk it out: Whether it’s a coach, biz friend, or your own journal, voicing these feelings helps you figure out what’s really missing.
  • Keep it real: Your audience wants you, not a polished AI version. Imperfect but authentic content builds stronger trust.
