The Easiest Way to Raise Your Rates Without Losing Clients

Worried you’ll scare off clients if you raise your rates? You’re not alone – but there’s a simple shift that makes it way less scary.

Prefer to read it? Here are the main points!

Feeling nervous about raising your freelance rates?

You’re not alone. As we head into September, a natural turning point in the year, it’s the perfect time to review your pricing. But I get it: the thought of telling your clients you’re upping your rates can feel seriously icky.

In this post, I’m sharing my go-to strategies to help make raising your rates feel less intimidating and more like a natural step forward. Because let’s face it: your bills are going up, your skills are growing, and you deserve to be paid fairly for your work.

Why Now Is the Time to Raise Your Rates

Between rising subscriptions, platform fees, and cost of living increases, your expenses are probably climbing. But here’s the truth, you don’t have to absorb all of that. Clients understand that prices shift. Businesses across every industry are doing the same, and your freelance work is no exception.

If the fear of client pushback is holding you back, here are five ways to raise your rates without damaging your client relationships:

5 Ways to Raise Your Freelance Rates (Without Losing Clients)

  1. Use Natural Checkpoints
Think about when it feels most logical to review your rates. September and January are common choices, they both feel like fresh starts. You can also align with the financial year or project completion milestones. The key is to make this a regular part of your business cycle, so it feels expected, not abrupt.
  2. Give Clients Plenty of Notice
Be transparent and respectful. Let clients know in advance: “From [date], my rates will be increasing to [new rate].” You might also offer them the option to book in advance to lock in the current rate. This gives them time to plan and shows you’re thinking about their needs too.
  3. Add Value Alongside the Price Increase
Rather than just stating the new price, remind clients what they’re getting. Highlight new services, improved skills, or specific results you’ve helped them achieve. It’s not about justifying, it’s about showcasing your value confidently (without apologising!).
  4. Don’t Discount Your Prices, Adjust the Offer Instead
If a client can’t stretch to your new rate, don’t immediately lower your price. Instead, consider scaling down the scope to fit their budget. Remember: discount what you offer, not your value.
  5. Test with New Clients First
Still feeling a bit unsure? Try rolling out the new rate to new enquiries first. It’s a low-risk way to build confidence before updating existing clients. Once you’ve seen positive responses, it becomes much easier to apply it across the board.

Remember: Your Freelance Business Deserves a Pay Rise Too

Raising your rates isn’t greedy or unreasonable, it’s a natural part of running a business. If you were in a traditional job, you’d expect a raise as your skills and experience grow. Freelancing should be no different.

And if the idea of starting this conversation makes your stomach drop, I’ve got something to help.
